At only 18-years-old, music-sensation Billie Eilish was able to walk away with a total of five out of her six nominated Grammy’s on January 26, 2020 including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance. She is now the youngest artist to ever receive a Grammy. Eilish also was nominated for Billboard’s Woman of the Year at the Billboard’s Women in Music event on December 12th, 2019. In her acceptance speech of the award, she thanked several artists, but specifically Taylor Swift for paving the road for her.

Many wonder where Eilish’s sudden fame came from- and the answer? Sound Cloud. Following her first hit single “Ocean Eyes,” which she wrote at 13 years old, she became a world-wide name. Although this song was intended solely for her dance teacher, it has, (to date), over 35.6 million plays on Sound Cloud. Helping her write her songs, produce her music, and even sometimes perform shows with her is her older brother, Finneas. Finneas has also collaborated with artists such as Selena Gomez and Tove Lo. Oftentimes, you will catch him playing the piano on stage with his sister, Billie.
From once recording songs in her childhood bedroom, she is now owning the stage at nationally-known events and concerts, such as the Grammy’s, Coachella, and the Oscars. She was even asked to sing the theme song for the new James Bond film titled “No Time to Die”. Recently, she was also featured in a Carpool Karaoke segment with James Corden. In this video, after singing a few of her hit songs together, Eilish shows Corden her childhood home where everything started.
Her first well-known album is When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which was released in March of 2019. This album was created in her brother, Finneas’ bedroom at their childhood home. It was primarily inspired by her personal night terrors and lucid dreams. In the video with James Corden, the album title and song names are written on her brother’s wall where it all started. Unlike other artists, she will be touring with her entire family for her 2020 tour.
Unlike many well-known artists, Eilish is able to reach a wide audience with her different genres in each album. While her quiet, soft vocals are melodic, her unique style stands out and doesn’t seem to necessarily match her voice. You can find Eilish incorporating different types of genres into her music; from electro-pop, to indie pop, to alternative rock. Oftentimes, you will find her wearing baggy, bright colored clothes. Her style typically mimics the opposite of the biggest fashion trends. She expresses her passions through her outfits, such as Japanese Anime and 90’s culture.
I first remember listening to Billie Eilish when Khalid released the song Lovely featuring Billie Eilish. I didn’t hear much of her before listening to this song, however, I instantly became obsessed with her voice. I was picturing some girly-girl to be singing due to her high-pitched voice, however, I was mistakenly shocked to see what she actually looked like. I have always loved her unique and original music and style. I believe the way she carries herself is unlike any other artist. She continues to stay so humble and modest whilst being the one of the most popular artists of 2019 and most likely in future years as well. If you haven’t already given her music a listen, I would highly recommend getting comfortable and putting her album on. All of her songs have a different feel, each contributing to her unique album.
