Student-Ranked Favorite College Munchies: Fall 2020

By: Natalia Pereira and Olivia Rescigno

Ever wondered what’s the most popular sweet snack on campus? Savory? Salty? Healthy? Well, we have all the answers!

According to a combination of Instagram and Google Forms polls, these are the numbers displayed in the “college student favorites” of each of these categories.

Sweet Snacks

  1. Ice Cream

For sweet snacks, Ice Cream took up the lead with 42.2% of all 289 surveyed college students. Wow, don’t college students love their Ice Cream?! Thank goodness for Good Uncle delivering that Ben & Jerry’s for our late night munchies! You can hit up the POD for your favorite sweet treats or make those Target runs worth it. One issue some college students might have with this is figuring out how to keep it cold, especially Freshman… Sometimes those mini-fridges just don’t cut it. However, there is a simple solution for all you: only buy what you can eat! Additionally, we have found that the mini-fridge freezers are just big enough to store a few of those Campion ice cream bars and popsicles, so use those meal swipes to satisfy your sweet cravings!

2. Cookies

Taking up second place are cookies: whether it be Oreos, Chips Ahoy!, sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, or Nutter Butters, 27.7% of surveyed college students love their cookies! Cookies are great to store in your dorm because they won’t melt and can last a relatively long time: especially the packaged ones. Life hack for Freshmen: next time you are in Campion, grab a couple of milks near the cereal/bagel station and save them in your mini fridge… Trust us, you’ll wish you had them when you open up that package of Oreos and you’re 5 cookies in.

3. Chocolate

A close third, Chocolate is a favorite by 20.2%. There are endless flavors of chocolate; and chocolate is pretty easy to come by. It’s nearing Halloween, so you’ll be finding bags of chocolate everywhere.

4. Fruit Snacks

Ahhh, the Fruit Snacks. One thing is for sure, the 9.8% of people who favor Fruit Snacks really love their Fruit Snacks. Everyone has that one friend who is obsessed with them, right? Gummies galore can be found in the POD, sometimes in DB, and obviously in other stores near campus. Also, we’ll let you in on a little secret: for all of you fruit-snack-lovers out there, sometimes the jar outside of DB near the office has free full-size bags of fruit snacks, so you can check that out from time to time.

Savory Snacks

  1. Easy Mac

Shocker! Just kidding, this wasn’t a surprise. Literally everyone on campus has a stash of Easy Mac in their dorm. Add water to the fill line, pop that in the microwave for a few minutes, then add the cheese packet. Easy, fast, delicious… No surprise that Easy Mac is a favorite by 50% of 286 students that completed the “savory” survey. Come on, guys. You know where to get Easy Mac: half of you are Easy Mac fiends!

2. Ramen

Again, no surprise here. Ramen is an OG college snack for broke college students. It’s known for being a college essential, which explains why it is 26.6% of students’ favorite . I guess the real debate here is which flavor of Ramen is the best… Just knock on your friend’s door or raid your roommate’s snack stash to obtain some Ramen, because literally everyone has Ramen. (Just kidding, maybe don’t steal your roommate’s Ramen). Ramen is super cheap so you can just pop over to Target or walk to CVS and get some for less than a dollar.

3. Microwaveable Meals

Not feeling Campion? Microwaveable meals are a great option, and are the favorite of 12.6% of college students. The variety is endless: everything can be made into a microwaveable meal nowadays. From Hot Pockets to Lo Mein, you can grab a cheap microwaveable meal that tastes delicious with easy instructions from the POD (and obviously Target).

4. Soup

Finally, we have soup which is the favorite of merely 10.8% of surveyed students. If you’re feeling a little under the weather or if you just want to get warmed up (especially as the weather is getting colder), soup is another great option. You can get canned soup, and there are directions to add water and microwave it. Don’t hate the soup! Soup is delicious, guys. Get it from nearby stores like (you guessed it) Target.

Salty Snacks

  1. Chips

College students love their salty snacks. More specifically, they love chips more than any kind of salty snack you may find. There’s so many different kinds and brands of chips, easy to cure a quick moment of hunger. Having different flavors provides endless options, making it a go to snack. From plain to barbecue to even crazy flavors like ketchup, chips will always fill an urge for a little snack. And the best part is you can find them in almost any store!

2. Tortilla Chips & Salsa/Queso

Following the chips trend, 25.2% of students agreed that their favorite salty snack is tortilla chips. Who doesn’t love tortilla chips with a nice side of salsa or queso? It’s a staple piece to college living. You must have tortilla chips; they’re such an easy snack but will help your late night cravings. You can even get a jar of salsa or queso to spice it up a bit. You can find this delicious snack at any grocery store.

3. Popcorn

Popcorn takes third place, with 22% of students calling it their favorite salty snack. Popcorn is a perfect snack to eat while watching a movie in your dorm on a night in. You can just throw it in the microwave for a few minutes or even get a pre-made bag. White cheddar popcorn is great to change things up a bit. But you can’t forget to add a little butter! If you want some flavor with your microwave popcorn, there is popcorn seasoning! They range from just plain butter all the way to bacon cheddar. You can check this out next time you hit up Target.

4. Cheese and Crackers

Cheese and crackers were not a very popular salty snack, only 10.6% of students claiming it to be your favorite. However, cheese and crackers definitely are a great pick. You can get the cheese and crackers already in little bags, or even cut up a block of cheese. I know I love to cut up some cheddar cheese and eat it with crackers. There are so many cracker options, from Wheat Thins to Ritz.

Healthy Snacks

  1. Fruit

Sometimes, we want to try to eat a little better, and let’s be honest, healthy snacks are amazing, regardless if you’re trying to maintain a diet. With an overwhelming majority, fruit took the lead for the favorite healthy snack with 61.9%. There are so many fruits to choose from, it’s honestly hard to pick a favorite. You can cut up some fruit and make a fruit salad, or just eat an individual fruit. You must look out for fruit that’s already cut up to make it easier!

2. Veggies and Hummus

Veggies and Hummus are also a great way to snack healthy, and students agree. 20.9% of students chose that to be their favorite snack. Dipping carrots in hummus just sounds amazing. Vegetables are a great way to fill you up and keep your energy levels high throughout the day. Veggies are a great, nutritious snack.

3. Yogurt

We can’t forget yogurt, which 17.2% of students claimed to be their favorite healthy snack. With yogurt, there are so many flavors to choose from. You can even throw in some cut up fruit to make it like a parfait. If you’re feeling a little sweet side, there’s also yogurts that come with M&Ms and Oreo pieces. Who said eating yogurt can’t be fun?
