With the amount of people you see walking around campus with headphones on everyday, you’d think we know our music, right?
Well we decided to test our student body’s musical knowledge by playing students songs from the top 100 chart from 1999 (20 years ago). The game was simple. All they had to do was name the song.
We interviewed three students, Nick Coppola, Michael Ribeiro, and Jake Enright. After taking ten songs off the top 100 list we played them the following and put their knowledge of music history to the test:
Our contestants all have differing music tastes. Jake likes grunge and alternative rock, while Michael likes hip hop. Nick is a mix of these two, as he likes hip hop and early 2000’s alternative rock.
- Meet Virginia- Train
- Higher- Creed
- Learn to Fly- Foo Fighters
- All Star- Smash Mouth
- I Want it that Way- Backstreet Boys
- Scar Tissue- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Heartbreaker- Mariah Carey feat. Jay Z
- Smooth- Santana feat. Rob Thomas
- American Woman- Lenny Kravitz
- There She Goes- Sixpence None the Richer
The predictions they made at the beginning of the interview were not totally off. Nick and Jake both predicted they would get five correct and ended up both naming 6/10 songs. Michael on the other hand was a little more ambitious in his prediction of seven correct. He then went on to name only three songs.
The end results were better than we anticipated at the start. Not only does SJU know the hit songs of today, but they can rock to a few throwbacks as well.
