Be careful, the next time Charlie Brown makes a three pointer, and the crowd explodes, you might have beer spilled on you!
Saint Joseph’s University recently made the decision to upgrade Hagan Arena and now allows fans to purchase alcoholic beverages during games. SJU wants fans to have the best experience possible, new additions to Hagan Arena include new lights, and free Wi-Fi.
“Fans across the country no longer want to simply attend a basketball game, they want an event.” said Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner.
The sale of alcohol was a major decision for SJU. Being on a college campus, the university wanted to avoid any unnecessary consumption of alcohol on campus. Although, other colleges have participated in this for a while, SJU attempted to block the sale and use of it at basketball games. Instead of staying home and watching the game with a beer on the couch, viewers may now attend the game as they have the opportunity to have a beer at the game too.
The new lights also help add to the atmosphere of the basketball game and also the introductions.
“It seems like they’re taking a cue from the Sixers and want to get the most hype out of the fans when they introduce players,” said Junior Will Rietzki, a 76ers and SJU basketball fan.
The lights help to highlight the players as they’re introduced, and help to highlight the overall experience of the game.
Free Wi-Fi has also been added to Hagan Arena because SJU wants to have more fans at their games create a buzz about the events, and this helps to accommodate them. They don’t have to worry about slow internet, and can post updates on their social media during the game.
These new additions help to achieve a better experience for the fans. “We simply have to be extremely focused on the fan experience at Hagan. The WiFi, new lights, new concession options — including beer and wine — are all an effort to enhance the experience of our passionate fans,” said Bodensteiner.

With SJU not having a football team, it is important for basketball, the school’s most financially sound sport, to be able to match up with any college basketball environment so these new additions should help close the gap on bigger college basketball programs.
