For many of us, our parents had a huge influence on our college decision. Whether we applied to their alma mater or they came on every college visit with us, their presence and experience helped us to make the biggest decision of our lives so far.
This is not 100 percent true for a decent percentage of students on our campus here at SJU. College was not always the first thought that came to mind for some when they graduated from high school. Some students with parents that never attended college did not always think that college was even a possibility; these students have made their mark on campus as first generation college students.
In the United States, 30 percent of all college students are first generation and that number is similar here at SJU.
