According to most mainstream teenage movies, students in the jazz band are unattractive and boring. They are depicted as unpopular, antisocial, and all around less than ideal humans. Their only friends seem to be their instruments. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Contrary to popular belief, band “geeks” are not actually geeks at all. They have social lives outside of band practice. Other activities occupy their free time and they have other friends who aren’t also in the band. These people lead normal lives and should be treated with as much respect as members of other clubs and activities.
Have You Heard These Myths?
⁃Band kids have never been to the gym.
⁃Bands kids are ugly and gross.
⁃Band kids have no athletic abilities.
⁃Band kids are super anti-social.
Participating in band should not define you as a person. It is unfair and overall incorrect to label someone based on only one aspect of their life. Playing an instrument does not determine your personality or physical appearance. If anything, students in the jazz band are especially impressive because they are able to juggle music, school work, and other extracurricular activities such as going to the gym, playing sports, and hosting radio shows. Band kids are the unsung heroes of the SJU campus and they deserve to be appreciated just as much as the athletes of the university.
